Review: ASUS ROG G752 Gaming Laptop

I took the ASUS ROG G752 for a spin and it handled each game I threw at it with ease. No surprises, it remains one of the best gaming laptop you can find at the moment. The G752 was launched last year and at the recent PC Show was discounted to $2898.

Thoughts

It comes with an Intel i7 Skylake Processor, 16GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 128 GB SSD and a GTX980M 4GB Graphics Card. It’s still top end specifications but there should be an upcoming refresh soon, but fans would have to wait, as no clear successor was announced at the recent Computex 2016. It’s actually quite similar to the G751 in terms of specifications, with the processor and RAM getting refreshed. Designed to be a full desktop replacement, the G752 retains the 17.3″ screen from its predecessor as well.

The 17.3″ LED Backlight Full HD 1080P screen is simply gorgeous. It is colour accurate and ASUS made a great choice with the Full HD screen instead of a 2K or 4K screen. The mobile GFX is just about right to support highest settings with 1080P resolution. But there’s also Nvidia G-Sync and 75Hz refresh rate support.

The main difference is that the G752 gets a bolder look this year around, and I think the refresh does keep the look appealing. This year theme is silver and bronze, paired with the usual ASUS ROG red LED lighting and Mayan-style motifs. There’s the large fan grilles on the back of the machine, designed to exhaust heat away from the gamer. These are paired with red leds for a fiery look.

Making full use of its bigger size, there’s no shortage in terms of connectivity. There’s both mini DisplayPort and HDMI, plus four USB 3.0 ports, ethernet RJ45, audio in/out and a combo audio jack with SPDIF. There’s also a USB 3.1 Type-C port that allows for super-fast data transfers to compatible hard drives, smartphones and no doubt, more with its increasing popularity.

The ASUS G752 is slightly bigger than its counterparts at 16.9 x 13.1 x 1.7 inches and 8.8 pounds. The Alienware 17 is 16.9 x 11.5 x 1.4 inches, 8.3 pounds) while the MSI GT72 2QE Dominator Pro is at 16.9 x 11.6 x 1.9 inches, 8.4 pounds. But portability should be the lowest of your concerns if you are looking for such a gaming laptop.

Battery life isn’t stellar either, but once again, that’s common for this range of gaming laptops. If you intend to game outdoors / on the move, keep a power outlet source in close proximity.

Verdict

The ASUS ROG G752 sports a fresh new look this year, and retains similar powerful specifications coupled with the latest Intel processor. This year ROG Gaming Center app is improved, and offers your usual system information as well as control of the display audio, and system lighting, all in one location, and customisable to different profiles for media plahback, gaming, or battery optimisation etc.

If you do want more graphics power, then there’s the GX700 or GX800, which has a desktop grade GPU with water cooling craziness.

The G752 is attractively priced (for a high end gaming laptop). But at this current juncture, we are expecting a new refresh model from ASUS for 2016. It should likely sport the Pascal-based Nvidia 1080M. ASUS recently teased fans with a benchmark of their latest upcoming ROG GPU against the GTX 980 Ti, the Radeon R9 295X2 and the GTX Titan X. With a score of 20,801, it trumped the other cards quite easily. The G752 does offer plenty for its price, and will be attractive to the bargain hunters.
